Sir Peter John Ratcliffe, born on May 14, 1954, in Lancashire, is a prominent British physician and molecular biologist known for his research on cellular response to hypoxia. He practices medicine at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and has served as the Nuffield Chair of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford since 2004. Ratcliffe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2002 and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. He was awarded the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award in 2016 and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2019 for his research on oxygen's role in disease prevention.
