He began his banking career in 1964 and quickly rose through the ranks to join the board of ABN at the age of 39. Kalff became chairman in 1994, succeeding Rob Hazelhoff. His tenure faced challenges, including failed acquisitions and a botched IPO. He retired in 2000 and subsequently held several directorships, including membership in the Tabaksblat Committee, which established governance codes in the Netherlands.
