He is known for significant developments in the GDR, including Tempo peas, Kuko rice, and the infant formula Manasan. He also worked on a method to extract kerosene from algae at the Institute for Grain Processing (IGV) in Nuthetal. Kretschmer was regarded as the 'Daniel Düsentrieb' of the GDR food industry.
