Prior to this, he served as the vice-chancellor and president of the University of Hong Kong. He has also held the position of dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol and was director of studies at Christ's College, Cambridge. His extensive academic career highlights his significant contributions to the field of medicine and higher education.
