Mortzfeld worked as a scientific assistant at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, where he conducted extensive research on the library's historical portrait collection, documenting it in 50 volumes from 1986 to 2008 with support from Volkswagen Stiftung and K. G. Saur. He has also translated various works from ancient languages like Latin and modern languages such as English and French.
