Vice Admiral Sir Peter Phipps (1908–1989) was a prominent officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy, serving from the 1940s to the 1960s. He notably received the Distinguished Service Cross for his command of an anti-submarine trawler during WWII and was also awarded a bar to this honor, along with the Navy Cross from the USA, for his actions in the Solomon Islands. Phipps made history as the first New Zealander to achieve the rank of vice admiral and held significant positions such as Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Defence Staff before his passing in a car accident.
