Peter L. Reader was a significant figure in Alaska's history, serving as the only delegate to oppose statehood at the constitutional convention. Born in 1913 in Grand Rapids, North Dakota, he had a diverse career as a miner and Army Corps of Engineers foreman during WWII. After the war, he worked in the dredging and water companies before co-founding the Nome Telephone Company in 1958. Reader passed away in 2002 at the age of 89 in Silverdale, Washington.
