Sir Peter George Snell was a New Zealand middle-distance athlete born on December 17, 1938, in Ōpunake. He achieved incredible success in athletics, winning three Olympic gold medals and becoming the only athlete since 1920 to win gold in both the 800 meters and 1500 meters at the 1964 Olympics. Additionally, Snell set five world records during his career, establishing himself as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of his time. Peter Snell passed away on December 12, 2019, in Dallas, Texas.
