Peter Vale is a prominent South African academic, serving as a senior research fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria and an honorary professor at the Africa Earth Observatory Network. He is the Nelson Mandela Professor of Politics Emeritus at Rhodes University, and has held significant positions including founding director of the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study and acting vice-rector for academic affairs at the University of the Western Cape. Vale has been awarded an honorary doctorate in the Humanities from the University of the Free State.
