Peter van Kessel is a Dutch historian, born on 25 December 1933 in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. He obtained his degree from Radboud University Nijmegen in 1961 and went on to receive his PhD in 1963. Van Kessel worked at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome from 1962 until 1994, eventually becoming the vice director. He contributed significantly to the field of history, particularly with his thesis on German students in Padua around 1600. His academic work earned him recognition, including membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
