Peyo, born Pierre Culliford on June 25, 1928, in Brussels, was a Belgian comic artist best known for creating the series Les Schtroumpfs, known in English as The Smurfs. This series gained worldwide acclaim after being adapted into an animated television series by Hanna-Barbera. Initially, the Smurfs appeared in the comic series Johan et Pirlouit (John and Peewit). Peyo also created other characters, including Benoît Brisefer ('Benny Bärenstark') and the cat Poussy ('Pussy'), and contributed scenarios for other comic series such as Natacha and Jacky et Célestin.
