Philip Edwards, born on June 10, 1938, is a pioneering American surfer from Oceanside, California, recognized for being the first to surf the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. He is celebrated as the first professional surfer and for creating the first signature surfboard. Edwards gained significant media attention when his photo appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1966. He was prominently featured in the classic surf films The Endless Summer and Surfing Hollow Days, which showcased the first film footage of Pipeline. He famously said, 'The best surfer is that one, who is having more fun in the water!'
