Phil Mason was a British trumpeter born on April 10, 1940, in Kentish Town, North London, and passed away on June 9, 2014. He grew up in Norfolk and Muswell Hill. After working as a gravedigger at 16, he moved to Ireland in 1960 to study Modern Languages and played in various jazz groups. He returned to England and played with Max Collie's Rhythm Aces starting in 1970. Mason founded the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival in the 1980s and formed his own band in 1992. He participated in numerous jazz recording sessions until 2007.
