He gained notoriety as the 'Craigslist Killer' after being implicated in the murder of Julissa Brisman in Boston on April 14, 2009, and several armed robberies. Markoff denied all charges but was found guilty of first-degree murder and other offenses. He was awaiting trial when he died by suicide on August 15, 2010, at the age of 24. His death raised concerns about inmate safety in Massachusetts jails, where mortality rates are notably high.
