Philip William Yates GC was an English recipient of the Edward Medal and the George Cross for gallantry during the 1931 Bentley Colliery Disaster in Yorkshire. Born in County Durham in 1913, he worked initially as an undertaker's assistant before becoming a coal miner. In a disastrous underground explosion, Yates and his colleagues bravely rescued injured miners, facing great danger. He was honored for his heroism, later exchanged his Edward Medal for the George Cross, and retired to South Yorkshire. He passed away on February 14, 1998, at the age of 85.
