Philippa Foot (1920–2010) was an English philosopher known for her foundational role in contemporary virtue ethics, drawing inspiration from Aristotelian ethics. Her work in the 1950s and 1960s sought to adapt Aristotelian ethical theory to modern perspectives, aiming to compete with deontological and utilitarian theories. Her influential critiques of consequentialism and moral skepticism helped revitalize normative ethics within analytical philosophy. One of her well-known contributions is the ' trolley problem,' a thought experiment frequently debated in ethics. Foot was also the granddaughter of U.S. President Grover Cleveland.
