Pierre Gibert was a French Jesuit priest, doctor in theology, and comparative literature. Born on October 24, 1936, in Aix-en-Provence, he joined the Jesuits in 1959 after serving in Algeria. He studied exegesis under Paul Beauchamp and Norbert Lohfink and completed his first thesis on German theologian Hermann Gunkel in 1974. Gibert became a biblical exegesis professor, eventually leading the Faculty of Theology in Lyon. He edited the journal Recherches de science religieuse and authored several works, including 'Petite histoire de l'exégèse biblique,' a classic in its field.
