He founded numerous sects during the 1970s to 1990s, creating about sixty associations, including "la tribu," "écoovie," and "Iriadamant." Maltais led a nomadic lifestyle through Europe and falsely claimed to be of mixed Indigenous heritage. He was suspected of involvement with terrorist groups and had multiple identities to evade authorities. He faced legal consequences in various countries, including Canada and Belgium, where he served four months in prison.
