Piet Laros (1901-1997) was one of the first Dutch volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, departing in 1936 to support the legitimate Spanish government against Franco's invasion. Injured multiple times in Spain, he later joined the resistance during World War II and was imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp. After the war, Laros was one of the few Spanish fighters to regain his Dutch nationality, highlighting the injustices faced by many comrades. He continued to protest for the rights of anti-fascist veterans, including a notable protest in 1969. A documentary in 1976 brought further attention to his life.
