Piet Van den Broek was a notable Dutch carillonneur born on March 6, 1916, in Chaam. He became Mechelen's city carillonneur and was the only Dutch person to hold this title. After moving to Mechelen at 18 to study at the Lemmens Institute, he graduated in 1938 and taught music. Van den Broek later completed a four-year program at the Royal Carillon School. He succeeded Staf Nees as city carillonneur in 1965. He retired from his position and as director of the carillon school on March 31, 1981, and passed away on October 26, 2008.
