Archimandrite Placide, born René Jean Emile Deseille on April 16, 1926, in Issy-les-Moulineaux, was a French Orthodox monk and theologian. He founded several Athonite dependencies in France, including the Orthodox Monastery of Saint-Antoine-le-Grand in 1978 and the Monastery of the Protection of the Mother of God in 1985, later known as the Monastery of Solan. He established the 'Oriental Spirituality' collection at the Bellefontaine Abbey and authored several works on the history of monasticism and Orthodox spirituality.
