Ponduri Venkata Ramana Rao (1917-2005) was an esteemed Indian microbiologist instrumental in the development of microbiology education in India. He served in the Army Medical Service during WWII and later advanced public health through significant roles, including Director of the Institute of Preventive Medicine, Hyderabad. He established a major vaccine unit in Nacharam and played a key role in the Smallpox Eradication Programme. Rao's work earned him recognition as a fellow of the American Public Health Association.
