He played a significant role as the director of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology in Bhubaneshwar, India. Prior to this, he held the prestigious TATA Chair for Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. In recognition of his contributions to science and technology, he was awarded the Padma Shri, which is India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 1977.
