Prince Makonnen Haile Selassie, Duke of Harar, born Araya Yohannes on October 16, 1924, in Addis Ababa, was the second son of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw of Ethiopia. He was appointed Duke of Harar in 1930 during his parents' coronation. Favored by his father, there were rumors he might be chosen as heir over his liberal elder brother, Crown Prince Amha Selassie I. Tragically, he died in a car accident on May 13, 1957, while traveling to the resort town of Nazret and was interred at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa.
