Coming from a Gond Adivasi Royal family, she made history by winning her first Lok Sabha election in 1980 at the age of 31, becoming one of the youngest members. Over her career, she was elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times, achieving significant vote shares, particularly in 1984 when she garnered 62.51%. She faced competition mainly from Nand Kumar Sai, with whom she had a notable electoral rivalry.
