Douglas Ray Stankewitz is an American murderer who gained notoriety after being sentenced to death in October 1978 for the murder of 22-year-old Teresa Graybill. He became the first criminal sentenced to death in California after the moratorium on death sentences was lifted in 1976. Stankewitz maintained his innocence for over 40 years while on death row, during which his conviction faced scrutiny. His death sentence was overturned in April 2019, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
