He served as a judge on the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR from 1977 to 1978, then as the chairman of the Kyiv City Court from 1978 to 1983/93. He was also the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine from November 16, 1993, until his death in October 1994. He is the brother of Zoia Butenko.
