Олекса Іванович Повстенко was a Ukrainian architect and art historian born on February 25, 1902, and died on January 15, 1973. He served as a member of the scientific council of the Sofia Architectural and Historical Museum from 1939 to 1941 and became its director in 1941. During World War II, he notably rescued Saint Sophia from destruction by Soviet troops and later wrote an esteemed monograph about it during his exile, which remains highly regarded in its field. He was also a participant in the liberation struggle and a Cossack of the 6th Zaporizhian Division.
