محمد أحمد العلي هو كاتب وروائي معاصر من العراق، ولد في 1 يوليو 1946 في محافظة ديالى. أكمل دراسته الجامعية في بغداد حيث حصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في الأدب والشريعة. له العديد من المؤلفات المهمة مثل روايات "قبل الفردوس" و"أيام الكبرياء" و"أحزان مرمرية" و"بئر يوسف". توفي في 2 فبراير 2009 بعد صراع طويل مع سرطان البنكرياس.
