Professor Alexander Petkov was a prominent Bulgarian hydrologist, born on April 12, 1912, in Mitrovtsi, Ferdinandovo. He graduated in civil engineering from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. Petkov worked in the field of hydrology as a research associate from 1954 to 1961, later becoming a senior research associate and head of the Hydrology section at the Research Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology. He was also a member of the National Commission of the People's Republic of Bulgaria for UNESCO starting in 1969.
