Vasil Velichkov (Stoichkov) was the first Bulgarian pilot of the jet aircraft Yak-23, as well as the first commander of a fighter brigade and division in Bulgaria's jet forces. He led the first jet aviation regiment and was the first Bulgarian to fly a jet aircraft on July 1, 1950. A reserve colonel, he graduated from flight tactical courses in the Soviet Union in 1949 and was a commander of an aviation squadron. He also served as deputy commander of Air Defense and the Air Force.
