He graduated from the Zhambyl Institute of Hydromelioration and Construction in 1980 and underwent special training at the KGB’s higher courses in Moscow and Almaty. Throughout his career from 1981 to 2002, he served in various positions within Kazakhstan's National Security Committee, culminating in his role as head of the 'Arystan' security service since 2002.
