He became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers in 1948 and was awarded the Ivan Machabeli State Prize in 1985 for his Armenian translation of 'The Knight in the Panther's Skin' by Shota Rustaveli. He shortened part of his surname to create his literary name, Karayan. He passed away on August 12, 1985.
