İlgiz Törökül oğlu Aytmatov (born February 8, 1931, in Bishkek) is a prominent Kyrgyz and Soviet scientist, holding a doctorate in technical sciences since 1985 and being a professor since 1991. He served as the president of the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences from 1990 to 1993 and directed the Institute of Physics and Mechanics of Rocks. Aytmatov has received various state awards in science and technology, and is a member of the International Academy of Engineering and other academies.
