Атанас Јанев was a Macedonian defender and special forces member of PEP, born in Strumica on August 23, 1976. He participated in the military conflict in Macedonia in 2001 and was killed in the Battle of Aračinovo on June 23, 2001. Official reports state he died in a shootout with Albanian terrorists, but alternate theories suggest he was accidentally killed by friendly fire from the Macedonian army due to a lack of coordination between AARM and MVR.
