He was an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and Professor. He was recognized as a distinguished scientist in Russia, recipient of the State Prize of the USSR, and an honorary citizen of Vladivostok. Somov served in the Great Patriotic War as a colonel of medical service in reserve and founded a scientific school at the Far Eastern Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Vladivostok, where he worked since 1960.
