Ewart Joseph Layne is a Grenadian communist politician and military figure, born on May 7, 1958, in St. Georges. He served as a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the New Jewel Movement and held the position of Colonel in the Grenadian Army. He was Chief of Staff of the PRA and served as Minister of Defense in 1981. Layne was involved in the coups of March 1979 and October 1983 and was later sentenced to death (commuted to life imprisonment) after the Grenada 17 trials, released in 2009.
