She was born into a family of an influential Soviet writer and journalist. Becker began translating at a young age and dedicated her doctoral dissertation to American African American literature. Her significant translations include works by Faulkner, Swift, and Dickens. During WWII, she served as a volunteer translator at the front. Her work gained recognition during the Perestroika period when her translations began to be regularly published.
