Khasan Aliyevich Appaev (July 22, 1904 – September 12, 1938) was a Karachay writer and prominent political figure in the 1930s, known as the first Karachay novelist. He was born in Kart-Dzhurt and educated in law and chemical technology. Appaev worked as a public prosecutor and later became secretary of the Kara-Chai Regional Committee of the VKP(b). His notable work includes the novel 'K’ara k’yubyr' (The Black Chest), published in 1935-1936, which captures the pre-revolutionary lifestyle and social conflicts of the Karachay people.
