Gvorgyan studied at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute from 1965 to 1971, while simultaneously working as a technology engineer at Armelktromash. He held various engineering positions at Astor and served as the director of Orbit factory from 1990 to 1998, then became Armenia's Minister of Trade and Industry in 1998-1999.
