Gari Merkviladze was a distinguished Soviet aviator and General-Major, born on February 16, 1923, in Batumi. He excelled in swimming and water polo before joining the Tbilisi Aviation School. During World War II, he carried out 386 combat flights, destroying 13 enemy aircraft, including a Me-262 jet. For his bravery, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945. After graduating from the Higher Military Aviation Academy in 1952, he continued his service and received numerous military honors. He passed away on April 2, 1971, and is buried in Tbilisi.
