Agostinho Barbieri de Figueiredo Batista Cardoso was a Portuguese police officer, intelligence operative, and anti-communist politician. Serving as deputy director of PIDE from 1962 to 1974, he was a key strategist behind the repressive policies of the Salazar-Caetano regime. He was implicated in the organization of the assassination of General Delgado. After the Carnation Revolution, he founded the far-right underground group, the Portuguese Liberation Army, and led it from exile while actively participating in the political struggles of the Hot Summer of 1975. He returned to Portugal after the political climate changed.
