Yao Bangyi (February 10, 1919 – November 29, 2011) was a renowned Chinese hydraulic engineer and expert in environmental water planning. He served as the first full-time director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Planning Office and was a founding figure in the environmental water resources discipline. He held key positions in the Hydraulic Society of China and led environmental consultative groups for major projects such as the Three Gorges Dam. Yao contributed significantly to water resource planning and was the chief editor of the planning section of the Encyclopedia of Chinese Water Resources.
