Vakhtang Pipia was a prominent Georgian surgeon born on December 29, 1929, and passed away in 1990. He was a corresponding member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences and a Doctor of Medical Sciences. After graduating from Moscow Medical Institute in 1954, he led a department of cardiac surgery in Tbilisi and later served as director of a research institute. Pipia was a pioneer in surgical treatment of heart defects in Georgia, published nine monographs, and received awards for his contributions to the field. He is buried in the Saburtalo Pantheon.
