Mahmoud Al-Bayyati was born on February 17, 1949, in Baghdad and left for political reasons in 1974. He received the Arabic Short Story Award in Beirut in 1981 and published his first short story collection 'Breaking the Sound Barrier' in 1984 and his first novel 'Dancing on Water - Rough Dreams' in 2006. He has been living in Gothenburg, Sweden, since 1991, having previously spent nearly twenty years in Prague. His stories explore the issues of misunderstanding between individuals, or between the individual and society, as well as the absurdities of life, death, and love.
