Николай Демьянович Гончаров (1929-2004) was a Soviet scientist and potato breeder, awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1974. He was born in Ukraine, later graduated with honors from agricultural institutions. He played a significant role in developing quality potato varieties, serving in various capacities at the Belarusian Research Institute of Potato and Vegetable Growing and later at the Sumy State Agrarian University. Notable varieties he contributed to include Belarusian Early and Zoryka. He was recognized as an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine in 1999.
