Rurik Ivanovich Sobolev was a Soviet engineer-physicist and a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR in 1970. Born on May 17, 1925, in Moscow, he participated in World War II as a sailor and was decorated for his service. He specialized in high-temperature plasma research, being part of a team that achieved stable plasma at temperatures nearing 40 million degrees. Sobolev earned his Ph.D. in physical and mathematical sciences in 1966 and worked at the Kurchatov Institute.
