Qaboos bin Said Al Said was the Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020. He was a descendant of the founder of the House of Al Said and was the longest-serving leader in the Middle East at the time of his death. After being educated in England, he returned to Oman and overthrew his father in a coup with British support. He implemented modernization policies that improved living standards, abolished slavery, and ended the Dhofar rebellion. He suffered from poor health in later life and named Haitham bin Tariq Al Said as his successor.
