Qasem Soleimani (March 11, 1957 - January 3, 2020) was an Iranian major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and commander of the Quds Force from 1998 until his death. He began his military career during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and was involved in clandestine operations, providing military support to Hezbollah and the Syrian government during the Syrian Civil War. Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 3, 2020.
