Competing in the 1952 Summer Olympics, she excelled in athletics, achieving a silver medal at the 1947 International University Games and winning British championships. Shivas balanced her medical career and athletics, earning medals in international events. After retiring, she qualified as an anaesthetist, married Stuart Barber, and settled in the Scottish Borders, where she lived until her passing in 2013.
